Manuscript Assessment

As an experienced editor and writer Gary works with most forms of fiction and non-fiction at all lengths from article to full-length book. Gary will read your manuscript with an expert, professional eye and provide you with a detailed written report on your book’s strengths and weaknesses. The report will include suggestions for revisions and improvements.

The report will be as long and detailed as it needs to be, but for a full-length novel expect something in the region of 1500-2000 words. The report will cover such aspects as plotting, characterisation, style, entertainment value, development of themes, literary quality, as well as any specific issues you may wish to be considered. For a shorter works the report will obviously not be as long. Afterwards you are free to ask as many questions as you wish.

As a member of The Society for Editors and Proofreaders Gary seeks to uphold the highest standards of professionalism at all times. Ensuring your manuscript is as good as possible will increase your chances of acceptance by an agent or publisher. However, while offering offering positive ideas for improving your work prior to submission, manuscript assessment alone can not guarantee acceptance and publication. Be wary of any individual or company promising that if you use their services a publishing house editor will definitely accept your work. No one can legitimately make such a claim, and those that do inevitably do not have the author’s best interests at heart.
